San Casciano Val di Pesa is a pretty town perched on top of a hill to the south of Florence in the direction of Siena, was under Florentine rule from 1272; San Casciano Val di Pesa, on the northern edge of the Chianti Classico zone, is the first major town on the Chiantigiana route from Florence.

Not far from Florence and Siena, surrounded by the charming villages of Scandicci, Impruneta, Greve in Chianti, Tavernelle Val di Pesa and Montespertoli, there's San Casciano in Val di Pesa. As well as Chianti area, San Casciano is well-known for its good wine and oil.
The town used to be called San Casciano a Decimo, because of its position: situated over the tenth milestone (decimum lapidem) of an important Roman street, maybe the one that connected the colonies of Florentia and Sena Julia.....

Around 10 miles south of Florence, San Casciano Val di Pesa is the principal town of the Pesa Valley and one of the major centres of the wider Florentine Chianti.

A tight ring of 14th-century walls encloses its small historic centre, where churches and a small museum house art treasures created when San Casciano’s importance as a fiefdom of Florence was growing from the mid-1300s.

Its modern suburbs are less interesting, but do at least have a good-sized Coop supermarket — not easy to find in the tiny wine towns of the Chianti hills.

San Casciano’s most precious artworks are displayed in the Museo Giuliano Ghelli, which inhabits the church of Santa Maria del Suffragio and a former convent next door. Opening hours can be a bit erratic, but it’s well worth checking, especially if you are interested in Tuscan art from the 1200s and 1300s i.e. before the Renaissance.

San Casciano It’s one of the most sought after destinations for people who want an alternative to Florence but who are looking for a place with a bit of life.
Lots of expats have decided to buy houses in or around San Casciano because of its superb location. What’s more, it’s not a sleepy country village, but a lively place with some very good restaurants, (we absolutely love the “Cantinetta del nonno”!), a theatre, a cinema, and a few nice places for aperitivi.

There’s a lovely green space just outside the walls, “Il Piazzone” with a great view over the valley and plenty of space to relax, where people of all ages can meet for a chat or an ice cream.

In San Casciano Val di Pesa you can savour real Tuscan life in a place that hasn’t been overtaken by tourists yet.
Better still, it’s a very good place to choose if you’re travelling with kids.
